Update on Vehicles For Sale

For an update Eastern has sold several trucks so if you are in need of work trucks you should could or e-mail Eastern immediately. Here is a list of what trucks are left:
1994 Ford Bronco
two older Chevrolet S'10's (1987 I believe)
1989 Chevrolet 3/4 ton 4X4 pickup
1992 GMC 1500
1991 Ford Bronco

Also new for sale is a Fiat 4R10 Rubbertire Loader with a new engine, transmission, and has very low hours. This is sure to move fast so call/ e-mail immediately.

Also, over the years Eastern has accumulated quite an inventory of office equipment, supplies, etc. Stay tuned to this space as in the near future Eastern plans on selling some of this inventory (computers, printers, fax machines, photo copiers, furniture, etc). All items will be priced to sell and in excellent shape and are perfect for any small business, for the home, or any other need.

Annual Ironworkers Employers Association Dinner/ Meeting

The annual IWEA of Western Pennsylvania will host their annual Dinner/ Meeting of Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at the Home Plate Club at PNC Park . This meeting is a long-stemeed tradition and this years speakers will be Steve Lindauer and Kevin Hilton of the NEA (Association of Union Constructors) and the National Maintenance Policy Committee . Also the annual Association Safety and Craftmanship Awards will be presented. Pictures of last years event can be viewed by clicking here .

November/ December West Virginia Construction News Magazine

In the November/ December issue of West Virginia Construction News Magazine, there is an article on current highway work in the state of West Virginia and an Eastern job is highlighted. Here is a clip from the article...
"The Division of Highways ' planned construction program for 2006 is estimated at $570 million. Highlighted below are major projects of over $1 million expected to be among the various program categories, with county location.
Tied for second-largest category at $100 million, Appalachian highway projects include construction on Corridor H in Grant and Hardy counties and the River Hill Road Bridge in Wood County, and resurfacing on corridors H (Upshur), L (Fayette), and Q (Mercer)."

Eastern Steel has performed the installation for the reinforcing at Corridor H Bridge near Baker, West Virginia in Hardy County. Here are some pictures taken of the bridge work taken from an area manager on his cell phone.

Another significant current project for Eastern Steel is the Children's Hospital Clinical Services Building, which is located in Pittsburgh, PA. Children's Hospital is easily currently one of the most signifant projects in Pittsburgh and consists of approximately 1300 tons (2.6 million lbs.) of rebar and 450,000 square foot of slab wire mesh. When completed the building will serve as a significant addition to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's family of services and centers. Here is a picture from the Children's Hospital website showing the current buildings.

To break away from normal topics, this post is more of an editorial. Eastern Steel is a Union employeer, meaning Eastern employees are union rodmen. Recent trends have shown an increase in illegal workers getting previous work held solely by union workers and contractors. This really is the tip of the iceburg and was a hot issue in the past Presidential election. Couple that with a smaller DOH budget, rising fuel costs, escelated steel prices, and general inflation and trouble may be on the horizon for area contractors and subs. It will be interesting to see if steel prices can come back down or the Federal government will make some needed reform.

Another project Eastern is currently working on is West Virginia Route 9, which is located just outside of Martinsburg, West Virginia , near the town Kearneysville. The owner is the West Virginia Department of Transportation . Presently, Eastern has worked predominately on building caissons for the bridge substructure . Here are some picutres.

James Rumsey Bridge

Another current project for Eastern Steel is the James Rumsey Bridge, which is located in, Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The bridge is actually located near the Antietam Battlefield ,for you Civil War bufs and is the project of the month for the IWEA . Currently Eastern is installing rebar on the deck of the bridge. The deck is over 1,000 foot long and has approximately 289,000 lbs of rebar. Here are a few pictures of Eastern rodmen tying on the deck.

SR 0022 Section A09

State Route 22 Section A09, Lewistown Narrows, is a current significant project for Eastern. It is located in the Lewistown, Pennsylvania area. The project owner is the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation . Eastern has been on site since June of 2004 and our work is still less then halfway completed. Some of the various structures Eastern has been building include: retaining walls, box culverts, stilling basin, MSE wingwalls, approach slabs, moment slabs, bridges, etc. All told Eastern is installing over 650 tons of rebar and 1,400 square foot of slab wire mesh, and 52 mechanical connections. The bulk of that weight is dedicated to the bridges and walls. Here are two pictures taken on site yesterday of a silling basin built by Eastern. A stilling basin is a pool, usually lined with reinforced concrete, located below a spillway, gate, or valve into which the discharge dissipates energy to avoid downstream channel degradation.

Allensville Low Water Crossing Bridge

Eastern started work today at the Allensville Low Water Crossing Bridge which is located in Berkeley County, West Virginia. Eastern is contracted to install the reinforcing, which amounts to 57 tons of rebar for the owner, West Virginia Department of Transportation . With all of the recent rain the job has been flooded for the past several weeks, causing Eastern's start to be pushed back to today from several weeks ago. Here are a few pictures.

Here are a few pictures taken at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Eastern is contracted for erecting/ installing all the rebar and post tensioning work. The project has over 290 tons of rebar, 76,582 lbs of post tensioning, and 34,000 square foot of slab mesh.
